Keage Incline (蹴上インクライン) is an old railway track in Kyoto that is open now to public. Keage Incline is a popular place to walk around and enjoy the quiet and peaceful atmosphere with the surrounding nature. In spring, cherry blossoms lined along the railway flourish and display spectacular scenery.

Keage Incline is situated Nanzenji Temple. It was the world’s longest incline railway track with a total length of 582 m, and used to serve as a water transport of Lake Biwa Canal between Otsu and Kyoto from 1891 to 1948. In 1977, it was restored to preserve as Industrial Heritage, then eventually it was designated as a National Historical Site in 1996.

Approx 90 cherry trees line along the railway track and visitors can enjoy a perfect spring walk under the pink flowers. Keage Incline is known as one of the most popular cherry blossom spots in Kyoto, yet it’s not as crowded as other famous cherry blossom spots.

If you are tired of visiting overcrowded temples and shrines in Kyoto, Keage Incline is a great place to walk freely and enjoy the unique scenery. The best viewing time for cherry blossoms in Keage Incline is usually from late March to early April.
